dirfa

(-ða, -t), v. to make bold; esp. ~ sik or ~st, to dare; ~st til es or at e-u, to have courage for a thing; bœndr dirfðust mjök við Birkibeina, became bold, impudent; ~st at gera et, to dare to do a thing.
