As defined by A Concise Dictionary of Old Icelandic (Geir Zoëga):

sjálfr

a. self; hann ~, he himself; hón sjálf, she herself; at sínum sjálfs vilja, at his own will (cf. sinn); er (liggr) við sjálft, at, it is on the verge, within an ace, that (var við sjálft, at þeir mundu berjast).
