(-ta, -t, rarely að), v. to amuse, entertain, with dat.; ~ sér, to amuse oneself (vér erum kátir ok skemtum oss); skemtu þeir honum frá ferðum sínum, they entertained him by telling of their journeys; esp. to entertain at meetings or festivals (with story-telling or songs); frá því er nökkut sagt, hverju skemt var, what the entertainment was; fekk þetta kvæði góðan róm, þótti ok vel skemt, and it was thought to be a good entertainment.
