As defined by A Concise Dictionary of Old Icelandic (Geir Zoëga):

sumr

a. some; þá féll áin sum í landsuðr, a branch of the stream ran away to the south-east; á sumu landinu, in some part of the land; þó gekk sumt eptir, still some things came to pass; sums kostar, partly; sums staðar, in some places.
