As defined by A Concise Dictionary of Old Icelandic (Geir Zoëga):

taumr

(-s, -ar), m. rein, bridle (Á. tók í taumana); háfa hest í taumi, to have a led horse with one; bera taum á ísinn, to measure the ice with a cord; ganga, akast í tauma, to fail, not to be fulfilled.
